I LIKE THE WAY YOUR HAIR FALLS IN YOUR FACE. ten am on thursday morning and jessica had a free day; she had pretty much finished university until september, her room was clean and all of her friends were busy doing things she had no interest in. she had left her flat and wondered what to do - free days were few and far between for a university student who actually did a lot of work - and somehow managed to find herself at london zoo. she hadn't visited in months and decided that money didn't matter, as long as she had a fun day out - she had plenty of money saved up anyway. two hours later and jessica was smiling through the glass at a turtle in the dimly light and damp reptile house. she always, always, in all the times she had visited london zoo - for she loved animals and visited every few months - saved the gorilla exhibit until last. there was just something about gorillas, she had decided as a child a long time ago, something about them that fascinated her. she wasn't sure what it was - then or now - she just knew that they were high in her list of favourite animals and she usually spent a long time hanging around the gorilla exhibit after seeing all the other animals, and she had done since she was a child. and of course, in true child like fashion, you always saved the best until last.
not that she didn't like reptiles, of course. she loved them too; strange enough considering she fit quite well into the girly stereotype. in actual fact she owned a gecko - not quite on par with the huge snakes, lizards, turtles and tortoises that currently surrounded her, but she doubted she could handle anything bigger than her little lizard. as it was, she had to concentrate and remember to feed it. she moved along to the next glass window and smiled through at the apparently sleeping snake. she checked the sign and saw it was a snouted cobra, and frowned a little when she saw it was nocturnal. that explained why it was sleeping, but that didn't make it an all too interesting exhibit. jess liked to watch snakes move, and she especially loved watching them eat; she thought it was amazing how wide their mouths could open and swallow a little mouse whole. strange to watch, but still fascinating. she watched the still snake and counted its scales, tucking her hair behind her ear. despite the fact it was tied up, jess had a big fringe and lots of short bits that escaped her bun. it didn't bother her most of the time, but when she was studying a snake, hair got in the way. the reptile house was empty apart from jessica and a zoo worker - it was thursday lunch time after all, and most people were either in school or at work. jess herself felt strange - this time last year she was still at school - but she had taken her final exams for the year and university was over again until september. she wasn't leaving london though; unlike a lot of students, who came from all over britain, jessica's family lived in london and the flat she shared with russell wasn't far from them. a lot of her friends had gone home for the summer, although russell's family also lived in london and so he was also staying in london.
the cobra in front of her stirred and began to uncoil itself, bringing the smile back to jessica's face as she watched it. there was something about animals - about all animals, not just gorillas and reptiles - that fascinated her. she was an animal person, through and through. she decided that before she left, she would ask around the zoo workers and find out if there were any summer jobs available. she needed something to occupy her time and working with animals seemed to be the most logical solution - she was training to work with children but children generally weren't in school during the summer. besides, she didn't want to overdo the children thing. she enjoyed it, of course she did, or else she wouldn't be training to become a preschool teacher. but at the moment, that was what she was studying, what she was training for. working with animals would be something new and interesting. yes, she nodded to herself. imagine working in london zoo!

he woke up not knowing where he was, as he did most mornings. opening his eyes, russell stared at the clock opposite him, scrunching them closed almost immediately after. it was too early to be awake, much, much too early, at least by russell's standards. most people were up & about at nine a.m but not russell. russell would gladly sleep until three p.m. and would still complain about being tired. he groaned as he felt a weight jump onto the end of his bed, blindly kicking out in an attempt to convince pirate ( his puppy ) to move. but, like his owner, pirate was as stubborn as a mule, & ridiculously optimistic. jess liked to joke that pirate was russell in canine form. russell just ignored her & carried on reading his heat whenever she made the comparison. he rolled out of bed only when pirate began barking at him, and stumbled his way to the bathroom, taking no notice of the post it note on the door ( entering this room before jess on a morning is suicide ). for once it was empty; russell couldn't remember the last time the bathroom had been empty. jess was usually always inside it. it didn't matter what time of day it was; generally, whenever russell needed the bathroom, that was when jess decided she did too.
spending longer than necessary in front of the mirror, checking his reflection, russell's eyes honed in on a post it note, which had obviously been screwed up & thrown in the bin before being flattened out & replaced. jessica's conscience never failed to amuse him. racking his brain, russell tried to remember a katherine, but couldn't place the name whatsoever. his recollection of the previous night wasn't so good without food in his stomach. he'd drank so much it was a miracle he was still alive. he dragged himself in the general direction of the kitchen, & stared at the contents of the fridge before deducing that he really couldn't make bacon sandwiches with day old milk & lettuce. he wandered back to the bathroom, yanking at his t-shirt & throwing it onto the laundry pile ( or more commonly known as the floor ) before he stepped into the shower, spending half an hour under the erratic stream of water. it took him another half an hour to dry off & get dressed, & by that time, he'd started to realise that the flat he shared with jeck was uncharacteristically empty. jeck was almost always at home with him. russell couldn't remember the last time he'd been left on his own. grabbing a clean t-shirt off the pile jeck had left near his tv, russ wandered through the hallway, making his way back to the kitchen & heading straight for the fridge. the fridge was usually where jeck left important messages, though it was usually full of things such as don't touch my chicken nuggets! or give lloyd some lettuce! russ picked them off the front of the fridge & aimed them in the direction of the bin, eventually finding one jeck had written that morning. grabbing his wallet & phone, russ left the flat, running down the stairwell like he always did. even falling & tripping down it hadn't put him off. he'd been fine after a couple of weeks; it wasn't that big of a deal. he just couldn't move his left wrist much anymore, that was all.
it took russell two hours of wandering around the zoo before he finally came across a familiar head of red hair. fighting his way through the crowds ( he knew for a fact that kids were meant to be in school on a thursday, so why were there so many of them here, now? ) russell ignored the glares he received after digging his elbows into the sides of various people. it was their own fault; if they didn't stand in such a huge .. group .. then maybe he wouldn't spear them with his ridiculously pointy elbows in the first place. heading towards the reptile house, russell squinted, trying to see who was inside through the dim lighting. that was the problem with nocturnal animals; they always had to be in the dark. so inconvenient. he walked through the room, fighting to get to jess's side to spook her, or at least make her jump. sneaking up behind her, russell wrapped his arms around her waist & rested his chin on her shoulder, grinning to himself. "boo," he whispered, holding in laughter.
jeck. i'm not even going to count the words for this. >:c he's wearing the t-shirt in the pic & normal jeans. & this fails, ughughugh.

I LIKE THE WAY YOUR HAIR FALLS IN YOUR FACE. jess liked the cool reptile house. it was full of lizards and snakes and turtles, all things that she loved. they were fascinating. usually, girls didn’t like reptiles. but then, jess wasn’t a usual girl. she came from a huge family and knew nothing but love. that was why she gave nothing but love to most people and animals she met. she’d never been stopped from doing what she really wanted, she’d never had her heart broken. she had broken her wrist once, something she held russ entirely to blame for. it had been his idea to use a dustbin lid to sledge down the hill, and jess wouldn’t have fallen out if he hadn’t been rocking it so much. in all fairness, he did take her to the hospital afterwards and signed her cast, although she had to pay for the cab. but, as always, she had forgiven him; this time, it was when he pointed out that it had been fun while it lasted and she had enjoyed her afternoon in the snow with him. jess enjoyed all of the time she spent with russ, which was most of the time. they were pretty inseparable. jess had only left the flat this morning without waking him because another girl had called asking for russell, something jess couldn’t stand. if she had it in her, she would hang up the phone and ignore the girls. but of course, she didn’t have it in her and she took the phone numbers of every girl that called the house and left them for russ to deal with. she knew he never called anyone back, which might have been the only reason she left the numbers.
the snake slithered about in front of jess, who knew that if there wasn’t a sheet of glass separating them, she would run. a gecko she could handle, but a cobra? not so much. she preferred her poisonous snakes on the other side of the glass. she was just wondering what would happen if she suddenly turned into harry potter, the glass disappeared and the snake started talking to her, when a pair of arms wound around her waist and someone whispered boo in her ear.
she squealed and flew into the air, spinning around and finding herself almost nose to nose with russ. she only recognised him by the bleached blonde hair that couldn’t belong to anyone else; she could barely see anything else. she hit him in the chest and wrapped her arms tight around his neck, hugging him half because she was glad he had found her, and half because .. well, because she liked hugging him. she breathed him in and smelt russ’s clean, boy smell .. and the smell of her own shampoo. she dropped her arms, took a step back and narrowed her eyes. “you’ve been using my shampoo again, haven’t you?” jess dyed her hair – she was a natural red head, as were all the cartwrights, but she dyed it an even brighter shade of red, and had done since she was fourteen. she bought special shampoo for dyed hair that helped the colour last longer and stay bright, as well as general hair care. lazy russell used jess’s shampoo rather than buying his own, even though sometimes jess bought shampoo specifically for red hair. she had almost gotten her own back once, by switching the bottle of shampoo with her red hair dye, but she chickened out at the last minute and shrieked not to use the shampoo at russ through the shower curtain. he just laughed at her for not going ahead with it.
“did you feed herbert? it was too early to feed him when i left, but i did feed lloyd. and i gave pirate some puppy milk, i didn’t think you’d mind.” jess and russ both loved animals; they had three pets in their little flat, a gecko called herbert who lived in a tank in the living room, jess’s rabbit lloyd who lived in a hutch in her bedroom, and russ’s new puppy pirate who roamed the flat and loved terrorising lloyd, much to russ’s amusement. although russ was good at looking after pets, it was usually jess who remembered to feed herbert. lloyd was entirely jess’s responsibility, and although she was a little creeped out by the bugs the gecko had to eat, she fed him mostly. pirate managed to eat everything that was left at a height he could reach. loving animals was definitely something the pair had in common, hence why a day at the zoo was a good idea for them. “i’ve already been around most of the zoo, but we can go again right? after we get lunch?” they had both paid to get in, they might as well make a fun day out of it. she linked her arm with russ and smiled up at him.
